How to Store Your Rare Coins

Coin protectionIf you want to get into coin collecting but don’t know where to start, consider building your collection around certified rare coins. Coin dealers offer a wide selection of PCGS-certified rare coins, including popular coins like the $20 Liberty Gold Piece and Saint Gaudens $20 Gold Piece. However, before you purchase certified rare coins to start your collection or add to your collection, it’s important that you know how to properly store these valuable coins.

Storage Standards
No matter which storage option you choose for your coins (see “storage options” below), there are some standards you should follow in any case to protect your coins and the value of your collection. For one, always store coins in a place that is consistently cool and dry. Sudden and dramatic changes in temperature and moisture promote tarnish and spots that will devalue gold and silver coins. Coins should also be kept in their original cases, whenever possible. It’s also important that you store alongside a coin the Certificate of Authenticity and information card that comes with it.

Storage Options
Collectors have numerous options when it comes to storage options for rare and valuable coins. Flips are clear plastic holders with separate pockets for coins and labels. Not all plastic holders are the same, though; collectors should avoid plastic holders that contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This chemical creates a sticky film that can spread to your coins and eat into their surface. As your collection grows and becomes more valuable, the best option for coin storage is a safe-deposit box. If you choose to keep your collection at home, invest in a quality safe and check with your insurance company to make sure you’re covered for the full replacement cost of your certified rare coins.
